I started my career in the rural sector, moving on to remote area nursing specializing in aboriginal health as both a nurse and midwife. I relocated to Perth Metropolitan midwifery working in all aspects of midwifery care. My long-term goal had always been to work in case load midwifery (one midwife throughout pregnancy, birth and postnatal.) I worked in the public sector as a community midwife for 4 years, however as health policies evolved and moved further from my philosophies I moved to private midwifery practice.

Midwifery Interest

I believe how a woman is treated in her pregnancy affects her birth and how she feels about her experience. I believe in guiding women to be autonomous in their decision making by providing unbiased information. I believe relationship based midwifery improves outcomes for the mothers, babies, and families. I have a particular interest and passion for homebirth and have spent the last 10 years developing this interest since my own homebirth.

Other Interest

I have two beautiful girls who keep me busy, we enjoy visiting all of Perth beaches swimming and snorkelling. I also enjoy sewing, and have a baby’s range of clothing. Knitting is a winter hobby favourite.

What do our Midwives do?

Midwives Perth provides one on one midwifery care from the moment they are pregnant until their baby is six weeks old. Our experienced midwives are experts in pregnancy, birth and post-birth care for mother and baby. They have all been through a rigorous education process and are professionally regulated to provide care to women from early in pregnancy. This includes all aspects of care including the ordering of scans and blood test and referral to a range of other practitioners where required.

What is a Midwife?

Midwives are autonomous practitioners who are specialists in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.

Midwives strive to help women to have a healthy pregnancy and birth experience. Whilst midwives are specialist in normal birth they are trained to recognize and deal with deviations in normal. In contrast, obstetricians are specialists in illness related to childbearing, deviations in birth and in surgery.

Midwives refer women to obstetricians when a pregnant woman requires care beyond the midwives’ area of expertise. In most cases, the obstetrician and the midwife then work together to continue to provide care to the woman and her baby. Midwives are also trained to deal with the many variations of normal such as where the baby may be “sitting” in an unusual position, using non-invasive techniques.

The midwife is recognised in law as a responsible and accountable professional who works in partnership with women to give the necessary support, care and advice during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period. The midwives are able to conduct births on ‘her’ own responsibility and to provide care for the infant. This care includes preventative measures, the promotion of normal birth, the detection of complications in mother and child, accessing medical or other appropriate assistance and the carrying out of emergency measures.

At Midwives Perth we can provide care for you from the time you are pregnant, for the birth of your baby up until your baby is 6 weeks old. Please contact us for a no obligation initial appointment and we can discuss your options for care.
